8 simple tips for a more sustainable beauty routine

Sustainability covers a variety of issues and there are lots of ways you can make a difference. Your beauty routine is a great place to start, for instance. Our everyday ritual is so natural to us, that we probably don’t even think about the impact it can have on the environment.

Shopping and living sustainably is nowhere near as difficult as it used to be years ago, especially with beauty brands being more conscious about their products. So if you’ve been meaning to make some changes to make your routine more eco-friendly, here are eight tips Kindred. has for you.

Ditch the face wipes

While face wipes are extremely convenient for taking off your makeup, convenient doesn’t always mean good, as they cause long term damage to the environment. So instead of taking your makeup off tonight with the 99p Superdrug face wipes, try to make the switch to a reusable or biodegradable option. The industry has come a long way and there are plenty of options available. I especially love the Face Halo, which replaces up to 500 single-use makeup wipes. I have had it for a really long time and definitely should get a new one, but it still works as if it was brand new.

Another great option are reusable makeup removal pads. The pads from Garnier are reusable for up to 1000 washes per pad and are perfect to use with your cleanser.

Look out for eco-friendly packaging and ingredients

Packaging plays a huge role in the amount of waste, so preferably you’d be looking for a product with no packaging, but that may not always be possible - so glass packaging instead of plastic or packaging from recycled waste is where it’s at. If it can’t be reused, recycled, or replaced, we don’t want it! Did you know you can use a cleansing bar instead of micellar water in plastic packaging? The Dr Botanicals cleansing bars are organic, suitable for various skin concerns and most importantly, sustainable!

Recycle product containers

You’ve made the effort to be more conscious, so don’t forget to dispose of the products and recycle. There are plenty of ways you can do so, and some companies/brands allow you to return your empties free of charge. Kiehl’s, The Body Shop, Neal’s Yard Remedies and plenty of other high-street stores, can recycle your empty products, even if it’s not their own brand.

Remember that products made from multiple materials should be separated before recycling (if possible). If you’re not sure, check the label on the back for the best way to dispose of the container.

Use refillable products

Another way to cut down on waste is reusable packaging. So many brands offer re-usable packaging with refill packs instead of having to buy a whole new pack. I’m talking cleansers, shampoos, even fake tan!

Stop wasting water

Are you guilty of keeping the water running when washing your face? I know I am, and it’s something I am trying to be more mindful of. We don’t realise what a toll our water usage has on the planet, so let’s all make a promise to turn off the tap when we’re massaging the cleanser in, okay?

Bamboo wherever you can

Bamboo is almost a magical plant - it’s the fasted-growing plant on Earth, and some can grow almost a metre in ONE day! It’s an extremely eco-friendly alternative to plastic, so think of switching your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one. Actually, consider switching to bamboo wherever you can - cotton buds, body brush, even underwear!

Use up whatever you already have

You’ve come to the end of some of your products and whilst you may be excited to start making your routine more eco-friendly, please do not just get rid off of every single product you own, so you can start fresh. Use up anything you currently have and make the switch gradually. You don’t want to be creating more unnecessary waste, right?
