Top 8 tips to revamp your winter skin-care routine

Oh, baby it’s cold outside and your skin is likely feeling it too. Now that the weather is getting chillier, we can now wrap up in extra layers to protect ourselves from the freezing temperatures. Can we say the same about our skin?

If you're looking to change up your skincare routine for the frostier months, we have some Kindred approved skincare tips to help.

Your skin is probably freaking out right now due to the weather changes. Imagine going indoors to places with warmer temperatures and then stepping outside again into the cold air on repeat day after day. It's safe to say that our skin takes a beating during the colder months, resulting in dry, irritated skin that is more prone to breakouts.

We can combat this disruption by adapting our skincare routine. The focus during this time of year should be mainly on preventing dehydration as well as ensuring your skin is moisturised and protected. There is also no need to ditch all of your skincare products. Simply adding a few minute changes to your routine can help boost your skin's natural protection barriers, leaving both you and your skin happy and healthy.

1. Swap your cleanser

If you’re not already using a cream cleanser, now it’s the time to make the switch; your skin is already lacking moisture, you don’t want to strip it of natural oils through using harsh exfoliators or scrubs. Cream cleansers are gentler on dry skin and provide additional moisture.

2. Use chemical exfoliants

Exfoliating is a definite must in winter. It gets rid of all the dead skin cells and reveals a glowing complexion, which is ultimately the goal. However, because your skin is already sensitive, you may want to switch to a chemical exfoliator such as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids). They do the same job by gently dissolving the top layer of the dead skin, however this method of exfoliating is much gentler.

3. Pack on the serum

A hydrating serum is an excellent way to improve the moisturising and anti-aging properties of your skincare routine, and it’s never too early to start. In the winter, any serum containing hyaluronic acid should be your best friend! Hyaluronic acid binds moisture deep within the pores, providing long-lasting hydration.

4. Use a richer cream

If your face still feels dry, you may need to use a thicker moisturiser. In the winter, lighter creams may not be as effective, so a richer cream will protect your skin and lock in moisture. Look for one that contains fatty acids and ceramides to help maintain your skin's protective barrier.

5. Don’t forget eye cream

Fine lines are the last thing you want, so you should already be using an eye cream. It hydrates and nourishes the delicate skin around your eyes, as well as preventing/treating signs of ageing. The skin around your eyes can easily become dry and flaky, which isn't ideal if you wear make-up.

6. Lip balm!

Because the skin on our lips lacks oil glands, they are more prone to drying out. Always keep a lip balm on hand for extra hydration.

7. Protect your whole body

Your skincare regimen should not stop at the face, you should make changes from head to toe as well. Replace your regular body lotion with a thicker, richer formula, preferably containing an ingredient like shea butter. Apply it right when you step out of the shower, while your skin is still damp in order to lock in moisture and replenish any moisture lost from that hot shower you most likely just had.

8. Still wear your SPF

Yes, even if you live in England, SPF is important all year-round. It shields you from UVA and UVB rays, which are present even on those cold winter days, and acts as a barrier against pollution. So, make sure to pack it on this winter season.
