With the announcement of the royal baby on the way (aka Rihanna and A$AP Rocky's child), men around the globe collectively fell to their knees in their local Tesco's upon hearing the news. Everyone else, however, sadly realised that we are most definitely not getting an album from RiRi anytime soon. But with the last two weeks jam-packed with releases, Kindred. has sifted through the best ones that you need to listen to right now! Take a look at the new projects released by artists you may or may not know.
Cariss Auburn - Fantasy
Hailing from Wolverhampton, Y2K enthusiast and synthpop singer Cariss Auburn unveiled her latest single 'Fantasy' which comes after her glowing EP Refraction that was released in 2021. Drawing influences from Destiny's Child, Mary J. Blige and Bree Runway, Cariss blends multitudes of R&B and pop within her music and this track, in particular, rejects feelings of loneliness.
"I want to live a dream-life completely content with my own company, but in real life, it isn’t easy for me to separate being alone from being lonely," she says. "The song expresses that limbo between escapism and reality."
Samm Hensaw - Untidy Soul
With the news of his latest project Untidy Soul receiving stunning reviews already, it's an album that demands to be listened to. Fusing elements of soul, R&B with heavenly vocals and choir harmonies, Samm Hensaw's Untidy Soul is yet another project that proves how talented the UK music industry is.
“These songs all tell very different stories, but the overall theme for me is self-growth," Samm says about the project. "You see the main character start in one place at the beginning and get to another place by the end, and hopefully that inspires people to have some reflection on their own lives—how they treat others, how they treat themselves. Because I think most of us are a bit of a mess on the inside. We’re all a work in progress."
Lava La Rue - Vest & Boxers
Delivering their first offering of 2022 after releasing the highly anticipated Butter-Fly EP. After ghosting us on social media for a little while, Lava La Rue unveiled the funky new single, introducing a new era for the singer.
“I wrote Vest & Boxers to be deeply relatable of what dating was like for myself and my teen lesbian/nblw friends growing up. I reference all the little moments we joke about - not knowing if you’re on a date or just meeting up as friends, walking into their bedroom for the first time and thinking how good it smells, not coming home for 2 days after the first night together and deciding to just move in. We were all guilty of it!"
DIVINEANGEL - OBiNRiN
Moulding their musical talents, musicians Muva of Earth and Angel Seka join forces to produce the delicate 'OBiNRiN' translating to 'woman' in Yoruba. Forming a new wave of Afro-punk jazz, the two artists successfully connect themselves directly to the diaspora of their African roots. Taking inspiration from Nigeria's psychedelic rock duo Lijadu Sisters, Ibeyi and UK artists such as Greentea Peng and Sade Adu, DIVINEANGEL is a union of two free-thinking people who want to showcase divine femininity and provide a healing and transformative experience to anyone who decides to tune into their musical journey.
Bert - Smile (Overthinking)
Releasing the double single consisting of 'Smile (Overthinking) and '44 Save All', UK artist Bert makes efforts in uniquely paving his own way within the underground UK hip-hop scene. Complete with vocal harmonies and preceding trip-hop-esque drum sounds, both tracks are a delightful breath of fresh air that is catchy and easy to listen to. With the playful and easygoing nature of Bert inviting us to delve more into his music, he offers a new perspective within lyrical direction and production styles.
